Charlemont-Savoy - Route 2 Stabilization

As a result of Tropical Storm Irene, the Cold River surged, causing sections of Route 2 in Charlemont and Savoy, MA to be washed out and the roadway made unsafe and impassable. In mid-October 2011, MassDOT put out an emergency repair contract, which they awarded to E.T.& L. Corp. This $5.3 million contract required E.T.& L. to construct approximately 5,000 cubic yards of gabion walls between Route 2 and the Cold River to facilitate the reopening of the roadway by December 15, 2011. To ensure safe travel from Charlemont to Florida and North Adams, the contract also included: refilling washed out areas, placing rip rap and grouted rip rap slope protection, as well as reconstructing the roadway, repaving and installing new guardrail.
