On August 28, 2011, Tropical Storm Irene dumped six to ten inches of heavy rain on portions of the Western Massachusetts causing rivers to rage and washout everything in their path. This deluge destroyed dams, culverts, roadways, and bridges in and along many rivers. On Monday morning, August 29, 2011, MassDOT District #1 asked E.T.& L. Corp. to mobilize our forces to Route 8A in Hawley, MA; They needed us to quickly reconstruct several sections of the roadway that had been completely washed away by Irene. By Monday night, we began a twelve hour per day/ seven days per week effort to get the road opened as soon as possible. Working alongside Massachusetts National Guard bulldozers in the Chickley River, we had the road open to traffic by week’s end. This $2 million effort concluded with the final repaving of Route 8A in late October 2011.
