Westfield - Columbia Greenway South - Part II Rail to Trail

The Columbia Greenway Rail Trail is a multi use recreational trail in Westfield MA which, when completed, will join the City of Westfield with the Southwick Rail Trail and the Farmington Valley Greenway in Connecticut.   Eventually, the trail will extend northward from the Westfield River to connect to the Manhan Rail Trail in Southampton and Easthampton and the Norwottuck Rail Trail in Northampton.

Phase II work consists of the construction of 5,125 feet of ten to twelve foot wide recreational trail on the mostly elevated, former New York/New Haven/Hartford railroad bed.  Beginning just south of the ‘Tin Bridge’, which spans the Little River, work will include rehabilitation of this existing 210 foot long steel truss bridge, including track removal and pouring of a new concrete deck topped with asphalt paving.  Further north, the existing 85 foot long railroad bridge over South Meadow Road will be demolished and replaced with a new steel beam bridge on MSE wall abutments, also with a concrete deck with asphalt paving.  Ornamental lighting will be installed along the trail as well as granite benches, a kiosk, bicycle railings and over 200 trees, grasses, perennials and wild flowers.  This trail will provide cyclists and pedestrians access to the downtown area restaurants, parks and businesses.

Work on this City of Westfield $2.3 million contract will begin in early 2014 and will be completed in one year.
