In December 2025, E.T.& L. Corp. began work on the Twin Cities Rail Trail (Phase II) project in Fitchburg, MA. This $22.9 million MassDOT project includes the construction of a shared-use trail along an abandoned railroad corridor from the end of the Phase I Section on 4th Street to the Intermodal Transportation Center in Fitchburg. The length of the project is approximately 0.425 miles. The work includes clearing, grading, pavement milling, full depth HMA and concrete pavement, sidewalks and pedestrian curb ramps, plantings, pavement markings, lighting, and other trail amenities.
Additionally, a multi-span bridge, Bridge No. F-04-075, shall be constructed and will carry the trail over the MBTA Commuter Rail Tracks, private property, and the North Nashua River to the Intermodal Transportation Center. The bridge will feature a prefabricated steel truss and steel plate girder superstructure with a reinforced concrete deck, safety curb, and ornamental steel railing and protective screen. The substructure will include a cast-in-place concrete retaining wall approach ramp/abutment on spread footings at the south end, eight reinforced concrete piers on micropiles along the bridge, and a reinforced concrete abutment on micropiles with adjacent MSE walls at the north approach.
Current work includes forming and pouring the North Abutment and Piers 6, 7 & 8. Micropile installation is underway along the south portion of the project for Piers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Track monitoring has been installed along the MBTA tracks and support of excavation has begun at Pier 1. Structural steel is currently in fabrication, with installation scheduled for winter of 2026/spring of 2027.
