On August 13, 2019, MassDOT awarded E.T.& L. Corp. a $5.9 million project for intersection improvements, including a bridge replacement on Route 129 in Chelmsford. The project included improvements to approximately 1,710 feet of Route 129 (Billerica Road) and approximately 400 feet of Riverneck Road. Also included was pavement micromilling and overlay and full depth roadway reconstruction on Route 129 (Billerica Road) from Golden Cove Road to Industrial Avenue.
The project reconstruction involved a new drainage system, rehabilitating the roadway surface, widening the roadway to include two 5-foot bike lanes and sidewalks on both sides of both Route 129 (Billerica Road) and Riverneck Road. The intersection at Route 129 (Billerica Road) and Riverneck Road was realigned to form a T intersection. A rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB) system was installed at the crosswalk near Industrial Avenue. Retaining walls have been installed to minimize impacts at River Meadow Brook and at the cemetery property. A new three-sided precast concrete bridge structure with a micropile foundation was installed to replace the existing culvert at the River Meadow Brook. The new culvert includes a wildlife crossing.
